One of my favorite questions is to ask the candidate what, in their opinion, are the three most important traits that one ought to possess to be successful in the position they’re applying for.

I usually ask this question toward the beginning of the interview because it doesn’t come across as a particularly difficult question and it gets the candidate to open up and start talking. Aside from that, it also accomplishes a few other things: It tests how well the candidate really understands what the role entails; it tests how well the candidate is able to see things from the employer's perspective; and it tests how much thought and research they’ve put into the interview and in assessing their own fit for the job—all this without coming across as a particularly difficult or threatening question.
