What are you not good at?

I don't have an answer for this question. I was recently asked this question in an interview and I dodged answering it. If anyone has an approach to answering this question please post it.

I'd proudly tell all the things you are not good at as you definitely do not want a job doing those things plus they'd be wasting their money if they expected you to do them. I'd then proudly say what I was very good at.

It's a great question to get as you can use it to "design" your job.

Also being open and honest is the best policy

I would clearly and honestly state my weaknesses and then explain how i work around these weaknesses to get the job done.

for example, i am very weak in paperwork and administrative tasks. i solve this issue by working closely with my personal assistant or secretary to keep me well organised since i'm not good at doing this myself.

therefore, my job performance is not impacted because i have someone reliable to leverage these tasks for me.

This appears to be the latest in 'trick questions' by interviewers, so everyone looking for a job should work on an answer to have handy. Dodging it is probably the wrong thing to do. Jeff's approach...state the weakness and how you deal with it...is probably on target. States the weakness, you are aware of it, but have learned to deal with it.

No one is great at everything, and things that we are not good at don't necessarily have to be work-related. "Can't carry a tune, so I only sing in the shower." would answer the question, add a bit of levity and maybe get the interviewee off the hook. Unless the interviewer pushes for a work-related answer, that could be sufficient.

Bad answers might be: can't get myself to work on time, don't work well with others/on teams/etc, can't seem to hold down a job for more than six weeks.... you get the idea.

I think that it's vastly superior to use an approach: identify an honest-to-goodness weakness, then talk about how one is addressing it.

For example: I sometimes have difficulty juggling appointments and tasks. I combat this by using a PDA and the Outlook calendar to schedule time for the second priority items, ensuring that I devote the time to those things as well and make sure second priority items don't require escalation to first priority items.

It's an honest answer, but also demonstrates self-awareness and a commitment to professionalism--and those traits are what the question is seeking to identify.

I was once asked this question, which I thought was very odd. I went with my feelings and responded, "Well, I am pretty good at many things, but to tell you the truth, I am not very good at following the crowd." It lightened up the interview. I was hired and later became my bosses assistant.
