Tell me about most difficult business situation you've ever been in which didn't work out, and what you learned from it.

Working in a job so incredibly boring I couldn't help but fall asleep several times a day (actually) despite caffeine, pinching, and epic sleep-a-thons outside of work. I ended up leaving on highly average terms with my employers. Lesson; it is soooo crucial to consider non monetary facets of any job you might apply for e.g. engagement, organisational culture (try to get a decent RJP before you start), and you MUST be proactive about getting yourself out of potentially negative careers situations. I suppose that's more of a career than a business situation, oh well. And no I would never use this as an interview question example if I wanted to be hired4sure.

From my point of view the most difficult situations are when you are in a business meeting which you carefully prepared and a sudden incident change as well the topic as the atmosphere of the total meeting.
In my case, during a meeting for new products I was confronted by our final customer with a competitor benchmark showing an early failure (warranty incident) of our product.
It was very important to show at the same time a clear sense of urgency towards the customer as well not getting personally in the line of fire. This ballanicng act so far has been for me the greatest challange and I learned a lot from it for later situations.

Easily, the most difficult business situation I've ever been in was the meeting I was called to by the client of a project that wasn't going very well. One small detail that they forgot to tell me was that their attorney would be in attendance. The stress factor was so high that as I left the meeting, I nearly passed out.

Lessons learned? (1) Never allow yourself to sit through a meeting at which only the other party's attorney is present. If you find yourself in such a situation, politely state that you hadn't been informed that your attorney was supposed to accompany you and that you would be happy to reschedule the meeting. (2) Never be afraid to ask if any attorneys are anticipated to attend a meeting. Many people may be willing to set a trap, but few will be willing to tell a bold-faced lie. (3) Never, ever, ever become known as the kind of person that would "forget" to advise someone that their attorney will be attending a meeting. If you plan on bringing your attorney, tell the other attendees and invite them to bring their attorneys as well. Little may be accomplished at the meeting if the attorneys are allowed to take over, but your reputation as a fair player will be secured.
